spring break '06

We had the kids for Spring Break this year, and it was a blast. We had them from the Friday before Easter through Saturday after the wedding. The boys chilled at home while H spent time with her aunt and cousin until Mike or I could pick her up after work. We haven't been able to see them during the week lately, so it was nice to have some extra time with them. Because of that we had them for the wedding too, which worked out perfectly.

holy honeymoon, Batman!

The honeymoon was a wonderful time. We got back to the old house after the wedding, got everyone changed, went to the new house to get the kids' stuff, dropped the kids off at their mom's, went back to the new house to switch vehicles, made another couple of stops on our way out of town, and were on our way. With the exception of some pouring rain and a creepy bank of fog that made going around the curvy mountain roads hair-raising at times, our trip to the mountains on Saturday went very smoothly.

It was close to 10 when we got to the B&B, and it took us a couple tries to find the right entrance to our room, but it was well worth it once we were there. We stayed in an awesome suite with a fireplace, king-sized bed, jetted two-person tub, down pillows, wood floors, deck, window seat, and ceiling fan. The owner had a bottle of champagne waiting for us when we got there, and the fridge was stocked with several types of coffee beans. The little kitchen had dishes so we could make our own meals if we wanted to, and she left little snacky things (popcorn, chocolates, biscotti, cookies, etc.) out for us as well.

On Sunday, our first full day there, we didn't even leave the room. The owner brought us cheese omelettes, sausage, Canadian bacon, muffins, and fresh fruit for breakfast, and we read, tested out the tub, played online a little bit, and napped. Mike even wrote a poem. For dinner we ordered pizza and enjoyed being hermits.

We lazed around the suite for a good part of the day on Monday, then went to one of the nearby towns to do some shopping, eat dinner, and see Silent Hill. By the time we got there, I had the beginnings of a migraine, so we revised our plan and went to Barnes and Noble and ended up sitting in the Starbucks part of the store with a stack of magazines and books for quite a while. My headache was almost gone when we left there, so we went to the theater to see Silent Hill. The theater was awesome. While it wasn't a "stadium seating" theater, it looked every bit as big as the stadium seating ones here, and the seats were nicely spaced out which meant there was plenty of leg room. The downside to that was that I had to stretch to put my feet up on the back of the seat in front of me. As for the movie, the dialogue was pretty bad in some parts, and it wasn't as true to the nature of the Silent Hill franchise as Mike was hoping it would be, but I liked the cinematography. The effects were pretty good, too. And even though it wasn't as creepy as I was hoping it would be, it was still creepy enough to make me jittery for the rest of the evening. (Side note: Laurie Holden, from The Magnificent Seven tv series was in it, and it took me FOREVER to figure out where I'd seen her before. Clothes from the Old West are quite a bit different from a police uniform.) After the movie everything felt surreal; I found myself waiting for parts of the movie to start happening. The surreal feeling lasted through dinner and didn't end until well after we were back at the B&B.

We'd planned to leave early Tuesday so we'd have time to pick up the puppies and get some stuff from the old house once we were back in town, but we didn't end up leaving until around 11. On the way home we stopped by a pottery shop I'd heard about and spent some time poking around the gallery and studio. We left with a candle holder for my sister and her husband, a shallow dish for my rings, a plate, and a forgiveness goblet. I got truffles too, but those didn't make it more than a few minutes down the road. When we got home it was still early enough that we had time to pick up some stuff from the old house (including the washer and dryer - I can do laundry now, yay!) and bring it home before we went to pick up the puppies.

In summary, we had a fantastic time, and I think it was a wonderful way to start off our married life.

Cliff Notes

What a crazy, great time. The wedding was fantastic, the honeymoon was awesome, and I absolutely <3 Mike.

Quick recap (some of these will get individual write-ups later, but it may not be in order):
Thursday - visited with family from out of town (Mikes mom, younger sister, and her daughter)
Friday - dropped the puppykins off at my sister's house, closed on our new house, packed up some stuff at the old house and moved it over, had dinner with family (everyone from Thursday plus Mike's brother and his wife and daughter), and had dessert and drinks at the new house.
Saturday - the wedding! dropped the kids off at their mom's, left for our honeymoon in the pouring rain
Sunday - the honeymoon! we did absolutely nothing all day long, didn't even leave the room
Monday - more honeymoon! we did nothing again for the first half of the day, then went out to pick up some books, see Silent Hill, and get dinner
Tuesday - came home, picked up the puppykins, and moved a washer and dryer

wedding Q/A

We're getting married in three days, and I'm finally at my limit. Last week I was bitching about how tired I am of having people ask me about how the wedding is going and Karinne gave me this pearl of wisdom: "Didn't you know that every wedding is public territory? Oh Kate. It's like being pregnant. Except complete strangers don't touch your stomach." Had I know this earlier, I wouldn't have told anyone other than the people that were invited to the wedding that I was getting married.

brief wedding FAQ (there have been several more questions, but these are the only ones I have the patience for today):

Q: DId you know the wedding's in X days?
A: I'm quite aware of that fact, yes.

Q: Are you ready to get married?
A: Yes, I'm ready for it.

Q: Are you sure?
A: Yes, I'm sure.

Q: You know you've still got plenty of time to change your mind/back out now, right?
A: Yes, I know, and no, I don't plan on doing so.

Q: Now why do you want to go and ruin a perfectly good relationship?
A: Well, I don't about you and your wife (it's always guys that ask this one), but I'm planning on being the exact same person after I say "I do" as I was before that. I seriously doubt that Mike is going to change drastically either, so I must be missing the part where everything is ruined. Also, I seriously doubt marriage is as bad as you're making it out to be.

Q: So are you going to play Rob Zombie during the wedding?
A: No, I will not be walking down the aisle to Rob Zombie. Will the Imperial Theme from Star Wars suffice?

Q: Really? Will there be storm troopers there?
A: Yes, really, and no, there will not be any storm troopers.

can't

I can't cry the pain in my chest away,
can't reach far enough inside to claw it out,
can't slice deep enough to replace the pain,
can't drink enough to make myself numb,
can't fall asleep and escape for a little while,
can't find the words to build a bridge to fix this,
can't think of what to do to step forward with you.

phantom elephant

I've been having a weird chest pain off and on since Saturday, and while it was bearable then, yesterday it felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest every 30 seconds or so. Thankfully it's eased up a lot today. I'd kinda chalked it up to anxiety from everything that's been going on (wedding, moving, etc.) but I'm still not sure just what the deal was.

My tenants moved out just over a week ago, so we're working on fixing up the townhouse before we move. As usual, Mike is awesome. He replaced the door and frame in the laundry room and fixed the upstairs toilet before we called it a day yesterday. We've got a lot of painting to do this week, as well as replacing the trim (quarter round? I don't know what it's supposed to be called) in the kitchen, fixing the downstairs toilet, and spackling the hole in the wall where the ADT panel used to be.

Sunday stupidity

What's up with stupid people on the roads today? We were on our way home from Lowes when some guy in a smallish SUV turned into the intersection right in front of us while we had the green light. Not only did he cut through, he slowed down too, like he was going to stop, but he was literally right in front of us, so we would have had to change lanes to go around him. Dumbass. Then, while we were at the light turn out of the shopping center, four guys on motorcycles rode up between the lanes to get in front of us.
